How I Acquired Expired Domains in the Tech Niche
This is how I acquired Expired domains in the Tech niche.
In yesterday’s post, I shared how I lost 80k INR doing intraday trading. After losing the money, I didn’t want to stay in the market, so I withdrew the left money. Now, I had my portfolio lying in my bank, and I was also making a decent monthly income. Now, I was looking for other investment opportunities. Then I decided to invest in expired domains. Between October 2021 and November 2021, I purchased not one but six expired domains worth 2.5 Lakh Rupees. So, starting today, I will share my journey of acquiring expired domains.
I was aware of expired domains since 2019. Here is how. In August 2019, I was doing SoC comparisons extensively on my site. They were ranking very well and had almost no competition. One day I saw a new website ranking above my article. I wondered why this new site had outranked me. I researched thoroughly and discovered that the site is built on a 20 years old expired domain. I got the idea that expired domains do work, but I never tried them.
In 2021, a blog called MPNRC.Org was the talk of the town in the Blogging community. The website was getting close to 10M visits within three months of starting the projects. It ranked on the keywords of almost any niche and was built on an expired domain.
I also had in my mind to try my hands on an expired domain. One day I was talking to my friend Bhanu Pratap, and he told me about an expired domain available for auction on Dan.com. I checked the DA and DR of the domain, which was 45+.
When I checked the backlink profile, the domain had high-quality backlinks from BBC, Bloomberg, TechCrunch, and hundreds of other websites. I immediately decided to buy the domain name.
The owner had set a price of $1000. I started negotiating with him with a starting price of only $50. Slowly I started increasing the offer; his last offer was $725. I tried to ask if he could come down a bit the seller denied it. So finally, I bought the domain name after paying $725.
It took a couple of weeks for the domain to arrive. When it does, I started a Tech website on 19th October 2021 without any further delay. Within two weeks, the site started showing promising results. Seeing the initial success of one expired domain, It made sense to acquire more domains, and I acquired five more expired domains.
In the meantime, the project on the first expired domain just took off. It started getting 100k page views within six months, all from Tier-1 countries. The site was making close to $1500 a month at its peak.
Looking at these results, I utilized the remaining domains and started two more projects. At the moment, those sites are also doing good.
So that’s it for this post. In upcoming posts, I will share how I purchased the remaining five expired domains and grew the projects on expired domains. I will also share one bad experience buying an expired domain that led to a loss of 20k INR. So stay tuned for future posts.
Thanks!
