How I Finally Started Investing in Stocks
In my last few posts, I shared how I earned money online by running a Digital media business and working as a freelancer.
I started doing this stuff in April 2017. For the first two years, I didn't make any money. It was April 2019 when I received my first income from Adsense. After that, I kept receiving payments, but the amount was only enough for the hosting cost and my team.
It was more of the same until I started freelancing in April 2020. As I wrote in one of my previous posts, I made 1 Lakh INR in the first month of freelancing.
I had never earned that much money and didn't know what to do with it. When money started coming, my expenses got increased. I started spending more on my needs and wants. At that time, I already had a MacBook and was in love with Apple products. So, I also got other products, an iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods Pro.
I was earning money and spending it on needs and wants. I never thought about Savings and Investing.
Every older person I met during those days used to advise me to save money. But I never took their words seriously.
Even on YouTube, Investing term was getting very popular. Everyone was opening Demat accounts. But I was happy in my own world.
It remained the same until Feb 2021 when one day, my friend Bhanu Pratap sent me a screenshot. The screenshot was of his Groww account, in which he had purchased shares. Seeing my close friend investing in stocks gave me the fear of missing out.
We had a brief discussion about he opened the account and all. The very same day, I opened my Demat account in not one but three brokers Groww, India, Upstox, and Zerodha. Although I opened the account by getting excited, I never bought any shares. I only had a free share of Vodafone Idea, which I purchased using Upstox's free credit. 😀
The chances of investing ended for me as Apple launched Apple Silicon-based M1 MacBooks, and I started planning to upgrade my MacBook. In April 2021, I bought the MacBook Pro M1 leaving me with no money to invest.
In one of my last posts, I shared I acquired MobilesTalk. It was my first investment other than starting TechYorker. Even this was not intentional, I did it because I wanted to help my friend.
But very soon, my approach toward money completely changed.
I had heard about Robert Kiyosaki's Rich Dad Poor Dad, but I never read it. I had watched its book summaries on YouTube but never took it seriously. In June 2021, I watched a playlist named "Millenials Money" on Robert Kiyosaki's YouTube channel.
It gave me a good understanding of how I should go forward in my career and a new approach toward money. I started implementing the things Robert said in his videos.
And finally, I decided to invest and purchased some stocks.
That's it for this post. In tomorrow's post, I will write about how I started with long-term investing, fell into intraday trading, and ended up losing 80k INR. So please stay tuned for that. Thanks!
