Avoid this mistake to become a high-paying content writer.

In yesterday’s post I shared 10 working strategies to become a highly paid content writer. Most of my readers are content writers and are just starting out their career. I believe the strategies I shared yesterday should help them grow in their career.

However, after publishing yesterday’s post I thought I should explain all those points in a bit more detail including my personal experience so you guys can understand it better. So, starting, today I will dig deeper into each of the points starting with selecting a niche.

As soon as you decide to become a content writer the first thing you should do is select a niche. If you don’t understand what exactly a niche is, It is basically the topics you will be covering as a writer. The biggest mistake you will make as a writer is not deciding a niche.

The main reason behind it is that one can’t be good at every topic. Suppose you have nothing to do with finance and you started writing an article around mutual funds. Your content can’t be good for an individual who poses interest in finance.

Why I am giving so much priority to deciding a niche is because I regularly come across writers who are ready to take writing work in any niche. Their bio says Finance, Tech, Health pretty much anything.

How can they be good around everything? They may do good research but all of the research will be dependent upon what others have written on the Internet. There will be no personal experience attached to their content.

I understand their concern about getting work. By taking work in every single niche they may get a few low paying work. But at the later stage when they want to pose as an expert in a particular niche and charge higher to their clients they will find it tough. I have personally experienced it as I am able to land many high paying gigs.

I also understand things from the employer's perspective. As you know I also run a publishing business. I have hired 100+ writers in the last five years and have gone through thousands of applications.

As most sites are in the Tech niche, I prefer working with writers who have defined themselves as tech writers or they have experience working as a tech writer. I generally avoid working with writers whose niche is not clear to me.

So, based on my experience, I can certainly say a good website owner avoids working with a writer who doesn’t have a fixed niche.

As you are reading this post and haven’t decided a niche for yourself then please do it. You are leaving out a lot of opportunities that you have got just because of this.

I have suggested it to many writers in my contact list and some of them have high paying gigs in no time. Give it a try and it will be one of the best decisions of your career.

If you are finding it difficult then don’t worry. In tomorrow's post I will write on how you can pick a niche as a content writer.

That’s it for this post. Thanks for reading. Have a great day.
