How to Decide a Niche for Yourself as a Content Writer

This is how you can decide a niche for yourself as a content writer.

In yesterday’s post I talked about the importance of selecting a niche as a content writer. But the problem is, most beginners get confused while selecting a niche. So, in today’s post I will write about how you can select a niche.

All of us have a different passion, interest, skills, experience, lifestyle in our past. Maybe you grew up watching a specific sport, you have watched a lot of entertainment content or you have had access to technology since childhood.

Everyone of us is unique and all of us have an advantage over others. And this helps a lot in deciding a niche. The idea here is to select a niche based on how you have spent your life so far. Sounds confusing, follow the below practice.

Take a pen and paper and note down the topics that most excites you, the type of content you like to consume yourself. Suppose you like watching sports, or you are good at finance, tech, food recipes, etc.

Note down every single interest you have. Once done go through each of them and then decide around which topic you will enjoy writing even when you are not getting paid. If you get an answer for you, great go with that niche.

If you ask me about my niche it is Tech since day one. I was also in the same situation back in 2017, when I had to decide a niche for myself. And guess what, I also did the same thing. I took a paper and noted down my interest areas.

I came with two such topics: Cricket, Tech. I have had a huge interest in Cricket and Tech since childhood. I also had a hard time deciding between both but I went with Tech thinking its impact is way bigger than Cricket.

Also, please don’t go with Tech just because I am writing this post and I chose Tech as my niche. Practice what I advised above. Note down all your interests and do some brainstorming. When you will write down all your interest areas you will also come with a couple of ideas.

Start with one and try it for the next few months. If you think you are not liking it after a few months, give it a try to the other one. There is nothing wrong in trying around a few niches initially. But once you get going don’t change it several times. The overall idea is to build an authority in your niche and that is only possible when you practice it for years.
