How to Find Direct Clients for Content Writing

· 4 min read

This is how you can find direct clients for content writing.

In my last several posts, I explained how you can use freelance platforms like Fiverr, Upwork, Freelancer to get clients for content writing. When explaining how you can get clients as a content writer I had suggested two ways for getting clients: Freelance Platforms and Direct Clients.

As I have already explained everything about getting clients from freelance platforms. So, starting today, I will write about getting direct clients. Let’s begin.

Before I suggest ways to find direct clients. Let’s understand why you should prefer working with direct clients over freelance platforms. The biggest benefit of working with direct clients is you will no longer be required to pay the 20% platform fee that Fiverr, Upwork deducts. As you are working directly with the client you can get paid with a manual agreement.

Now that you know the benefits, let me explain how you should try getting direct clients. There are basically two ways you can reach out to clients directly.

  1. Website Hiring or Contact Us Page
  2. Social Media Platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, etc.

Website Hiring or Contact Us Page: When you are trying to find direct clients the first way is to reach out website owners through their hiring or contact us page. Make a list of all the websites in your niche. Select the ones you would like to work with.

On their website look for a hiring or career page in the footer. If they have any open positions on their hiring page apply for it. I will highly suggest taking some time out and writing a detailed customized cover letter while applying.

What I have experienced writing customized letters increases the chance of getting a reply. If some of the websites do not have a hiring page you can go to their contact us page to find the email of the admin.

You can send a cold email with the subject Content Writer Job Application. Again write a customized letter specifically for that website. If there is a requirement on that website and your profile matches their needs you will most likely receive a reply.

Social Media Platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, etc: The other way to find direct clients is using social media platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter or Facebook. I personally prefer Linkedin and my second preference is Twitter.

LinkedIn is the most powerful tool you have to make direct clients. I have personally used it to find clients with a budget of as high as 8 Rupees per word. If you are already using LinkedIn, start leveraging its full potential.

Send personalized connect requests to website owners or hiring person of the website at which you would like to work in your niche. When they accept your connection request, have a conversation with them and ask if they have any requirements.

Similarly, you can use Twitter to reach out to the website owners. If their DM is turned off you can gently reply to one of their tweets and ask them if they are comfortable having a conversation. Most of them will happily agree to have a chat with you.

You can also use Facebook to make direct clients. Most website owners have a facebook profile where you can send them a friend request. When you are friends with them ask if they have any requirement for a content writer.

So these are two main ways to find direct clients. I have explained all of them in a nutshell. In the coming posts, I will explain each of these ways in a bit more detail. I hope you found this post useful.
