From 32 to 518 Articles: How the Expired Domain Site Grew

· 3 min read

In yesterday's post, I discussed the initial growth of one of my expired tech domains. In today's post, I will continue how the project grew further.

I ended the last post talking about the performance till May 2022, when the total articles were 32, and the monthly visitors were around 1.5k.

Seeing the results in May, I published 25 articles in June. I almost doubled the number of articles published till May. With so much new content, the site responded very well, and the traffic increased to 2.5k visitors in June.

But what happened in terms of the number of published articles in July was truly insane. I published 71 new articles. I was expecting a sudden traffic growth, but the increase was nominal. The site received around 3.3k visitors.

The growth didn't happen because my site got hacked in the first week of July. Hackers got access to my site and added themselves as administrator. I came to know about it after a couple of days. They had created 2 lakh pages in this period, redirecting to their phishing sites.

As soon as the site got hacked, search engines de-ranked our pages, and all the traffic was gone. It was a nightmare, but somehow I recovered the site from this hack. I will write about the whole incident in tomorrow's post. For now, let's continue with the story.

The hack hampered the growth, but I continued publishing new content. In August, I published 65 new articles taking the overall number to 193. Despite all the hiccups, the traffic continued growing, and the overall traffic stood at 4.5k visits.

In September, I published 58 new articles. Now, I had 251 evergreen articles published on the site. With so much content, the traffic shoots up to 11k visitors. It was a growth of almost 150%.

I published 60 new articles in October. As the last month ended up very high, October was flat with around 10.5k visits.

In November, I published 68 new articles, taking the final no. of articles to 379. The traffic increased to 14.7k visitors.

I continued pushing great-quality articles and published 82 new articles in December. Now the site has 461 articles. The traffic got almost doubled in December, with 27k visitors.

In the current month of January, I have already published 57 new articles. I plan to increase the number to around 65 before the month ends. The final number of published articles is 518. Continuing the growth, the site has received 40.8k visitors in January. It will touch 44k visitors when the month ends.

The overall traffic since starting the project is 118k visitors with 161k page views. The site monetizes primarily with Adsense and has made $1273.55 with an RPM of around $10. It also has some Amazon Affiliate articles chipping in around $100 so far.

Overall, it was one of my best experiences growing a project from 0 to 50k visits a month. As mentioned above, in tomorrow's post, I will talk about the hack that happened with this project. So please stay tuned.

Thanks for reading this post. Have a great day ahead!
