Growing an Expired Domain to 50k Monthly Page Views

· 3 min read

I purchased an expired domain in the Tech niche and grew it to 50k monthly page views in seven months.

In my last couple of posts, I shared the story of one of my expired domains. In today’s post I will write about another expired domain I purchased from GoDaddy Auction in Nov. 2021.

After I won the UMATech domain in the Auction, I excitedly started looking for more expired tech domains. One day while scrolling through the Auction listings, I came across a domain name. The name was short, catchy.

I immediately checked its DA, DR numbers and both were very promising above 40. Then I checked the backlink profile, It was even better. The site has backlinks from Windows.com, WindowsCentral.com, and many high-quality websites in the Windows niche.

Next, I looked at the domain in Archive.org and found the website to be very legit. It was live until the domain expired so no scope of any spammy content. I went through each appearance the website had in Archive and everything looked good. The domain was owned by a U.K. based company and it was Windows Phone related.

I placed my bid for $20. Soon, I got outbid, then I stopped bidding and started observing others. In the last 5 minutes when the auction was going to expire. I got active and started outbidding others.

Someone had set a bid of $800 there. I kept increasing my bid and when I bid for $810. I was the highest bidder. As it was the last 5 minutes of the auction. No one bid further on the domain and I won it.

I paid for the domain amount and started waiting for the domain to arrive in my GoDaddy account. Finally, It reached my account on 10 November 2021. Without any delay, I installed WordPress and made it live.

Although the site was live, I didn't write an article until 26 November. As the domain had good links from Windows related sites, I started publishing How-to Guides around Windows. In the next 14 days, I wrote 12 articles on the site.

Then, I got busy in some family emergency and didn’t publish anything for the next couple of months. With only 12 articles the site got 373 visitors in December and 395 in January.

In February when I got free from everything I published two new articles taking the number to 14. In February the traffic remained the same at 362 visitors. Again, in March I published two articles and traffic was more or less the same at 377 visitors.

It was April when I started taking this project a bit more seriously and published seven new articles. Taking the tally of total numbers of articles to 23. This was the first time the site showed a glimpse of growth. The number of visitors grew to 914.

In May, I published nine new articles increasing the final number to 32. The site responded well and traffic grew to 1556 users in May.

So with just 32 posts the site was getting 50 visitors a day and was making $75-100 a month. But what happened after it in the next 6-7 months was insane. As this post is already getting longer I will continue it in tomorrow’s post. So, please stay tuned. Thanks!
