· 3 min read

This is what you should know about web hosting as a Blogger.

In my current series of posts about starting a blog, I have already explained how you should decide a niche for your blog and the blogging platform(WordPress) you should choose. And in the last few posts, I explained everything about domain names.

When all these things are in place, the next requirement you have for setting up your blog is a reliable Web Hosting. So starting today, I will write about web hosting.

In the next few posts, I will write everything you should know about web hosting as a Blogger. I will touch upon the topics like what is web-hosting, how it works, types of web hosting, which one I personally use, and which one you should get. In today's post, I will give a brief overview of web hosting.

If you are an absolute beginner and are not familiar with the term web-hosting, then first, let me simplify it for you. Web hosting is the place where all the data of your website, be it images, or text, will be stored. It is basically a virtual computer set up in a data center and connected to the world wide web. Your website will be using the CPU, GPU, RAM, Storage, etc., of that computer to function.

When someone will type the domain name of your website in a web browser. The Domain Name System will send them to the IP address of the server, and then the server will serve them with all the content that will load up on the browser.

In the very early days of the Internet, access to web-hosting was very limited. Internet companies had to build their own data servers to operate their website. It was a very costly affair, and there was no way an individual could afford it.

At the end of 1994, a company called GeoCities started offering web hosting easily. It was the first time when millions of people started building websites, creating text content, and become the part of the world wide web.

Over time, many web-hosting companies like Hostmonster, Dreamhost came into place. These companies invested in building data servers, and they started offering web-hosting companies to small business owners and individuals at a much cheaper rate. Now small business owners could rent a small part of a huge web server at a nominal monthly cost.

Later in 2022, e-commerce giant Amazon also entered this space with Amazon Web Services and started offering scalable cloud hosting.

The release of WordPress in 2023 was a huge turning point in the web hosting industry. With the growth of content management systems like WordPress, people with non-technical background started building websites, and it fueled the growth of web-hosting companies.

If we look at the current scenario, we have over 3 Lakh companies globally offering web-hosting services. Some of you may already have heard the name of a few, like Godaddy, Bluehost, Hostinger, etc.

Now, I hope you guys have a better idea about web hosting and how it functions.

That's all in this post.

Thanks for reading. Have a great day!
